Youth Drug Abuse Profile Drug addiction is a complex but treatable disease. It is characterized by compulsive drug craving, seeking, and use that persist even in the face of severe adverse consequences. For many people, drug abuse becomes chronic, with relapses possible even after long periods of abstinence. In fact, relapse to drug abuse occurs at rates similar to those for other well-characterized, chronic medical illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, and asthma. As a chronic, recurring illness, addiction may require repeated episodes of treatment before sustained abstinence is achieved. Through treatment tailored to individual needs, people with drug addiction can recover and lead productive lives. The Juvenile Delinquency and Persons in Need of Supervision (PINS) Division handles matters involving juvenile delinquency matters, designated felonies and PINS petitions. Domestic Violence and Custody Division expedites the processing of orders of protection and assesses custody and visitation matters. In cases that do not involve domestic violence, the Mediation Services Project attempts early resolution of custody cases. And finally the Support and Paternity Division hears cases involving child support, spousal support, paternity and interstate support (New York State Unified Court System, 2008). Youth Services is responsible for providing treatment options for juvenile offenders within the States juvenile justice system. However from the research some states do not offer alternatives to Juvenile Court (New York State Unified Court System, 2008). This includes p revention, community-based programs, and residential options (Missouri Department of Public Safety 1998). The juvenile court is a court of special jurisdiction dealing with children under the age of seventeen in criminal cases, and under the age of eighteen in all other matters.
